Pastor, fight pride with prayer

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PASTORS (BY SPURGEON)

The minister who does not earnestly pray over his work must surely be a vain and conceited man. He acts as if he thought himself sufficient of himself, and therefore does not need to appeal to God. Yet what a baseless pride to conceive that our preaching can ever be in itself so powerful that it can turn men from their sins and bring them to God without the working of the Holy Spirit. If we are truly humble-minded we shall not venture down to the fight until the Lord of Hosts has clothed us with all power, and said to us, “Go in this your might.”

SERMON ILLUSTRATION FROM SPURGEON

Spurgeon was a master illustrator. You can use this illustration in your own preaching to describe the importance and comfort of knowing God.

Infants, when they are among strangers, are pleased with little toys and amusements. But when they become hungry, nothing will do for them but their mother’s breast. So it is with a child of God. He may for a time be satisfied and find pleasure in the things of this world, but he only finds lasting and sure happiness in being embraced in his Father’s arms.

A Great Book for Teaching Calvinism To Others

Recently, I finished reading Humble Calvinism by J.A. Medders with a guy in my church who was curious, but unconvinced, of the doctrines of grace. Humble Calvinism is a great accessible book to help people see the doctrines of grace in Scripture, correct common misunderstandings (and abuses), and show how these doctrines lead to a more humble, joyful Christian life.

I know reading this book will help you communicate rich theology in an accessible way, so I hope you’ll grab a copy today for yourself and another for someone in your church.

ONE MORE REMINDER: PREACH JESUS THIS WEEKEND

“Do not preach about the gospel, but preach the gospel—the full, free, glorious gospel of the living Christ who is the incarnation of the good news.” — Charles Spurgeon
