Pastor, work hard.

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PASTORS (BY SPURGEON)

My grandfather said to me, many years ago, concerning the preparation of a sermon, and I have always remembered his words, “I study my sermon as much as if the work of preaching depended entirely upon myself. And I go into the pulpit relying upon the Spirit of God, knowing that it does not depend upon myself but upon him.” The same thing is true in the great matter of our salvation. God saves his people. “Salvation is of the Lord” from first to last, but no man is saved apart from his own believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. That faith is God’s gift, but it is man’s act.

SERMON ILLUSTRATION FROM SPURGEON

Spurgeon was a master illustrator. You can use this illustration in your own preaching to describe salvation by grace.

As the workman when his six days’ work is over goes up to his master’s pay table and waits for his wage, we believe that the meritorious work by which heaven is procured for us is all done. Therefore, we are waiting in the name of Jesus to take the reward that as a matter of justice is due to him, and has been by his dying testament transferred to us.

ONE MORE REMINDER: PREACH JESUS THIS WEEKEND

“Others might preach the gospel better than I do, but they could not preach a better gospel.” — Charles Spurgeon
